Swim with the Turtles at Turtle Town or Take a Turtle Tour
Excerpt from I Need to Get L'eid from the Teresa the Traveler series of books.
Turtle Town
I was happy to leave the cold weather behind on the crater and get back to the sun and surf. I had bought a new snorkelling mask the day before that had a built-in digital camera and I couldn’t wait to try it out. The hand-held underwater camera I had brought with me from Canada was not as easy to us as I had hoped. The mask-cam was virtually idiot-proof...a feature that I happen to love in a camera. When I saw something I wanted to film, I hit one button for movie or the other for snap shot. Dale suggested we visit an area called Turtle Town – a known green sea turtle hang out. While Dale swam out into the ocean in search of turtles, I stayed near the shore and marvelled at all the cool fish swimming amongst the reefs. After about 30 minutes, I started to wonder where Dale was. I spotted him and started swimming out towards him and I almost reached him when I heard him shout my name...from the other direction. He caught me just in time, I was about to swim off with his doppelganger. I gave up my pursuit of the stranger and joined Dale just in time to see the two green sea turtles he had discovered. They looked so peaceful floating about the ocean floor, coming up for a breath of air then diving back to the bottom. I could have spent all day with them. But unfortunately I wasn’t wearing fins and my legs started to get tired. Dale grabbed my hand and pulled me back to shore pointing out a number of other fish along the way. What the heck was with this guy? First he drives me to a volcano, then he finds turtles for me to photograph and pulls me back to shore when I get tired. He was behaving like the leading man in a Harlequin Romance. What was he going to do next, gallop in on a horse and pull me out of a burning building? |
