Visit the World's Largest Man Made Islands
The Palm Islands (the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira) are three artificial Palm-tree shaped islands off the coast of Dubai; they are the largest project of this type in the world and when complete will be the world’s largest manmade islands adding 180 kilometers of sandy beaches to the city of Dubai. The islands will be the home to over 60 luxury hotels, numerous residential waterfront villas and apartments as well as marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities and health spas.
The entire project was commissioned by Sheikh bin Rashid Maktoum as a means of increasing tourism in Dubai. He even added a personal touch to the Palm Jebel Ali in the form of a “horn-tooting” poem he wrote written on the circle around the fronds of the palm.
“Take wisdom from the wisIt takes a man of vision to write on water. Not everyone who rides a horse is a jockey. Great men rise to greater challenges”
Interesting Palm Island Facts
1. The three islands are visible to the naked eye from space.
2. They are in the shape of a palm tree to create maximum beach frontage.
3. Each island is surrounded by a crescent which acts as a breakwater and is able to withstand a 4 meter high wave.
4. Over 12,000 palm trees will be grown in a nursery in Dubai to supply the islands.
5. The same company that is building the Palm Islands has also built a world-shaped group of smaller islands.
6. It took four years of extensive planning to ensure that the islands would not disrupt the environment.
7. Investors from all over the world can purchase their own free-hold, tax-free piece of property
