Visit a Cave Church at the Selime Monastery
Selime is one of the biggest monasteries in Cappadocia. Cut into the soft tuff rocks, it contains many caves for all the different needs of a medieval life in a monastery. UNESCO World Heritage
Excerpt from Single White Female Backpacker:
We stopped in front of a large mountain with fairy chimneys (a term used by locals to describe the tall thin rock formations that litter the countryside) so we could hike to a cave monastery. I was just beaming. Turkey was proving to have some of the coolest sights in the world. Climbing up the narrow rock trail and through the rock caves to get to the church was an experience in itself. It was hard to believe that people actually lived there at one time. The church was well preserved and surprisingly large with majestic archways and stonework hinting at how amazing it must have been during its glory days. I could have spent hours poking about all the other cave buildings to see where the people slept, ate and socialized This was a real-life bedrock village, I was half-expecting Fred Flintstone to ride up on his dinosaur and yell yabba dabba do. From the mountain you can get a great view of the surrounding landscape that many say resembles a scene from a Star Wars movie. The landscape all over Cappadocia was so unique that I was surprised to discover no major movies had been filmed there. It would be the perfect setting for a Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter movie. |
