Discover the Dead Sea Scrolls
If you love to watch the History Channel then you have no doubt heard about the Dead Sea Scrolls, why not see them first hand? They are stored in the Israel Museum which was Founded in 1965, and ranked among the leading art and archaeology museums in the world. It houses the world’s most extensive collections of biblical and Holy Land archaeology. It also has the most amazing small scale model of the Old City during the Second Temple Era complete with a replica of Herod’s Temple. Seeing the layout of the Western Wall and the temple mount before the Second Temple was destroyed brings the story of Herod’s Temple to life.
The Shrine of the Book is the current home of the Dead Sea scrolls, a collection of about 900 documents including texts from the Hebrew Bible found from 1947-1956 in eleven caves around the Dead Sea. Written on parchment and papyrus, the manuscripts which date between 150 BCE and 70 CE found their way from a Bedouin camp to New York where they were advertised for sale in the Wall Street Journal. The Bedouins, who originally found the scrolls selling the first three for a mere $36, had a hard time convincing dealers they were authentic. In 1957, four of the scrolls were advertised in the Wall Street Journal and sold for $250,000. The Shrine of the Book was constructed in 1965 with the help of funding from the family of David Samuel Gottesman, the Hungarian philanthropist who had purchased the scrolls as a gift to the State of Israel.
