Moray
Excerpt fromt the book Soul Searching in South America from the Teresa the Traveler series:
We met up with our tour group the following day at 9:30 and boarded a mini bus for Moray – an archaeological site approximately 50 km northwest of Cuzco on a 3500m high plateau. The site, consisting mainly of several enormous terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is about 30 m deep, was possibly used by the Incas as an agricultural experimentation center. The depth and orientation of these depressions with respect to wind and sun creates a temperature difference of as much as 15 °C between the top and bottom.
This large temperature difference may have been used by the Inca to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. It also boasts a sophisticated irrigation system as do many Inca sites. I sound like an expert on the site but when we were there, Monique and I ditched our tour guide and wandered around the site on our own. Figuring it must be some sort of religious site we made our way into the center of the bottom circle and put in our requests to the Inca gods. Monique asked for clarity and I, of course, asked for love. Not that I didn’t trust the Universe to deliver, I just figured a little help from the Inca gods couldn’t hurt. I laughed at the irony of our situation. What Monique wished for most was the ability to travel around the world. Her trip was coming to an end and she was not ready to return to her husband and kids. What I wanted most in the world was the husband and kids. In fact, part of the reason I travel the world is in hopes of meeting my true love. I wondered if the two of us were just caught in the rut of wanting what we don’t have. If we got what we wanted would we both be happy or would we just long for the next thing we thought we couldn’t live without? |
